Daniel Moseley becomes second male Queen's winner at Hickstead

Daniel Moseley and Billy Grand become the second ever
male rider to win the Queen Elizabeth II Cup
Daniel Moseley jumped the sole double clear in the Templant Events Queen Elizabeth Nations Cup with Julie Slade and the Billy Stud's Billy Grand to become one of the youngest winners of the class. He is also the second male rider to win the title, the class having formerly been a ladies' only international Grand Prix.
"I am absolutely over the moon," said Daniel, 21, who is the stable jockey for Britain's William Funnell. "William's not here today he's at the wedding [of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall with his wife Pippa Funnell]. I can't ring him to tell him, but I am sure he'll find out somehow,"

Worrying water
Early fences caused problems for the majority of the field, particularly the water jump and its following Hickstead planks at fences four and five.

"A lot of the horses in the class do very well at national level, but they haven't experience arenas like this one or international water jumps, so they often go green," said Daniel. "I brought my horse to the Derby meeting here and he went really green then. This time, he was absolutely fine."

Guy Williams and Titus III finish second
First clear
Dan was the first of the 24 starters to go clear and only Guy Williams (Titus II) and Tim Davies (Valentijn O) joined him in the jump-off.

Going first, he opted to go for a steady clear, a decision that won him the class.

Guy followed at a much quicker pace with his previous day's Nations Cup partner. However, the planks fell but his time was good enough for second when Valentijn O hit the same fence for Tim Davies.

Double winner
This win comes a month after victory in the under-25s championship for Daniel at Hickstead's Derby meeting with Seventh Fee. Daniel was keen to praise the experience he's been gaining from his boss William, whose yard he joined two years ago.

"It's not just about the horses I get to ride and the training William and Pippa give me, it's also about the confidence they instill," said Daniel. "I owe them such a lot."
